Weekend Preview – October 17, 2013

What’s getting wide release this weekend?  A horror remake, an action film with old stars, and the second film this year about WikiLeaks, that’s what.

Not having been a horror fan growing up, I’ve yet to see the iconic original (though I mean to rectify that shortly).  The story of outcast teen with an abusive mother, Carrie, is based on a Stephen King novel.  When the young girl (here portrayed by Chloë Grace Moretz) learns she possesses telekinetic powers, those who have mistreated her will soon feel her wrath.

Even though I haven’t seen the 1976 version, I’m still wary of any remake of a film that is so well known.  I doubt it will live up to what the fans of the original are looking for, but Moretz and Julliane Moore (who plays her mother) are both fabulous, so this very well could be a good film in its own right.

Sylvester Stallone is a guy who breaks out of prisons for a living.  Arnold Schwarzenegger is a guy he teams up with when he’s double crossed and trapped in a top secret, supposedly impenetrable prison.  That’s about all you need to know here.

It’s OK fun, but pretty forgettable.  Worth a cheap rental down the road, but don’t see this one in theaters.

Here’s what you need to know about this WikiLeaks film.  Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing as the founder of the controversial website, Julian Assange.  The supporting cast is fine.  The story is subpar and some of the elements of the film are laughably bad.  Yup, that’s about it.
