Weekend Preview – June 28, 2013

It’s a double dose of Deja Vu this weekend.  Melissa McCarthy stars in a “mismatched duo” comedy for the second time this year, and terrorists have once again taken over the White House.

The Heat

Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock are a mismatched pair in this female buddy cop movie.  When FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) and unorthodox Boston detective Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) are forced to work together in taking down a drug lord, personalities clash and comedy ensues.

It’s funnier than Identity Thief, but suffers from an unevenness.  McCarthy is still her same love her or hate her self while Bullock is annoyingly stiff and naive as an FBI agent nobody likes.  Together they have decent chemistry, playing off each other rather successfully.  The finished product, however, is mostly forgettable.  It’s a cheap laugh but not much more than that.

White House Down Poster

White House Down

It’s Die Hard in the White House as Channing Tatum plays a Secret Service reject faced with having to save his daughter (Joey King), the President (Jamie Foxx), and the entire country when an unknown force takes over the White House for nefarious purposes.  Better in just about every way than the seemingly identical Olympus has Fallen, the action is well choreographed, the characters more or less intelligent, and the plot at least as believable as is required from a Hollywood actioner.

Oveall, it’s pretty decent and a good amount of fun, if a bit redundant.  If you didn’t see, or especially enjoyed Olympus has Fallen, this Die Hard clone isn’t a bad choice.
