Weekend Preview – February 8, 2013

Two wide releases are hitting the big screen this weekend.  Are either of them worth your time?

 Trailer:

When Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) finds his life crashing around him due to his identity being stolen, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Apparently if your identity is stolen there are only two options – let some incompetent police officers try to maybe solve your case in a year or so, or track down and convince the person who stole your identity to come across the country with you so they can give a full confession and save your career. I’ll give you one guess as to which of these unrealistic scenarios the comedy Identity Thief is about.

The story is the most generic, lifeless, road trip with two unlikely people to ever grace the big screen. I can only imagine that it languished around Hollywood for some time, just waiting for someone currently thought to be funny, but not too expensive, to be inserted into the screenplay.

Side Effects

Trailer:

Side Effects, the latest from Stephen Soderbergh has a hot cast and a topical premise.  Starring Jude Law, Rooney MaraChanning Tatum, and Catherine Zeta Jones, this is a story about a new wonder drug for treating anxiety.  When young Dr. Banks (Law) prescribes “Ablixa” to Emily (Mara), things couldn’t be better for her and her husband recently released from prison (Tatum).  That is, until mysterious things start happening.  Mysterious things like Emily murdering someone.  A cautionary tale about popping too many pills to fix your problems?  Seems to be.

With a great cast, a talented director, and an intriguing plot, I’m definitely interested in this one.
