[UPDATE]: Just in case anyone was still not sure, yes, this was an April Fool’s joke 😉
I don’t normally report on casting news, but this one is pretty big and sure to stir up some controversy. In a press release earlier today, Disney announced that the lead character in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII will be the well known character, Mara Jade, re-imagined as Luke Skywalker’s daughter – to be portrayed by Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart.
“We auditioned hundreds of talented young actresses for this part, some of whom would surprise you,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucas Film. “In the end, it was Kristen’s raw emotion that really sold us on the part. You are going to see a side of her you are not expecting. Mara Jade is such a such a wonderful character that we knew we had to find a way to use her in this film. Obviously, given the timeline of Episode VII, she would no longer be in her youth, which is important given the story we wanted to tell. We adapted her character from Luke’s wife to his daughter. Giving this part to Kristen is probably the smartest casting decision I have ever made.”

What do you think? At first I was skeptical, but after reading the plot summary, I think it might just work.
